Retrieval was never the answer

A quiet re-reading of the RAG literature, and where the citations stop holding.

Retrieval-augmented generation was sold as the fix for hallucination. Read the literature closely and the story is murkier: retrieval helps at the margins, but the citations stop holding exactly where the hard reasoning begins.

The lesson is not that retrieval is useless — it is that architecture is not a substitute for judgment. The systems that work pair retrieval with a human who knows what good looks like.
